Here are some simple rules of the road, courtesy of MyBikeLaw.com.
- Always ride in the direction of traffic – this means please don’t go the wrong way down a one-way street. Not only is it illegal and dangerous, it upsets car drivers and does not advance the cause for a more bike-friendly city.
- Stop at stop signs and obey traffic signals – see above
- Beware of vehicular blind spots and intersections – most of you have probably driven a car before so think like a driver AND a cyclist when riding.
- Sidewalk riding is often against local law and unsafe.
- Use bike lanes when it is safe to do so.
- Always wear a helmet.
- Have lights on your bike when riding at night – this is an easy fix folks and very important for enabling cars and pedestrians to see you, and important for you to be able to see when there is something in the road you wouldn’t want to run into.
