Bike-Friendly Businesses

While the League of American Bicyclists has an official Bike-Friendly Business program, (click here for their scorecard at a glance that includes things like bike parking, showers for employees etc…)  Charleston is making inroads.  So here is a list of Charleston’s bike-friendly businesses. What makes a business bike-friendly in Charleston? They make it easy for those of us on bikes to do business with them or they use bikes to conduct business!   In the future – we will be asking you to nominate your favorite bike-friendly business. 

Restaurants

TacoBoy Downtownbike racks galore right outside the front entrance.

Vickery’sThey’ll let you pull your bike right into the courtyard.

Fleet Landingbike racks right outside the front entrance, plus railings if there’s no more space.

Fuel – enough room for 40 bikes in their outdoor courtyard.  As a matter of fact they hosted a Charleston Cycle Chic post-ride fete there.

Retail 

Blue Bicycle Booksused, rare and local books.  Most of their employees ride their bikes to work, and its owner started Critical Mass.  Plus, their mascot is…none other than a Blue Bicycle.

Grocery

Harris Teeter Downtown – has bike racks right out front.  You’ll always see a few locked up with baskets ready to be filled. 

Earthfare at South Windermere – large bike rack and a few more around the shopping center.

Schools

MUSC – bike racks are located all over campus and they have their very own Cycling Group.  Click here for a map.

Bike-Friendly Neighborhoods

Here is a map of Charleston, SC’s bike-able neighborhoods. What makes an area bike-friendly? Traffic is slow or bike paths are available, streets are connected to other areas, you can ride for several miles, restaurants and services are nearby, and they are just downright beautiful.
